Years back, I spoke with Mr. Beard regarding the A mark stamped on the barrel of one of my Springfields, right below the Armory mark and date. I remember him telling me that it had to do with the rifle having gone through rebuild, but keeping it’s original barrel. I forget the details and was wondering if Mr. Beard would mind refreshing my memory.

The "A" mark has two similar meanings, depending on the period when applied. Up to WWI, the "A" mark meant that the barrel was on a rifle turned in for overhaul (or alteration), was found to be in serviceable condition, and could be re-used. During and after WWI, the "A" mark meant that the barrel was new, but a second-class barrel. The specific meaning of a second-class barrel is not clear, but is believed to indicate that the barrel had to be fitted in-house and could not be shipped out as new spare replacement.
