    Stock stamp question

On my straight grip and pinned stock, there is a "K" under the "P" stamp. I was wondering the meaning of the "K".

Not to hijack the thread, but my pinned SC stock has an H about that size between the circle P and the trigger guard, and my pinned Remington stock has an L in the same place. Do they represent which lathe was used to make the stock? I'm assuming that was automated to some extent so marks correlated to the individual lathes would be a form of quality control.

The "K" is a factory subinspection mark applied by the stocker to indicate that certain critical stock dimensions measured true to form and gauge.

John, would the same likely be true of the L and H on my pinned stocks reported above? For what it's worth there is a W on the front of the pistol grip on my 03A4 stock. All of the stocks mentioned have all the proper other marks: Ordnance Wheel and FJA plus RA on the two Remingtons.

Yes. The very small letter or number behind the trigger guard or near the proof mark is a stock subinspection mark.

Were these subinspection marks, as we have described, for the earlier, later, or all Remingtons ?

All Remingtons. And all Springfields. And all Rock Islands. And all Smith-Coronas.
