    1903 Springfield #3700xx, Part Identification

    Sequestered Ode to a 1903

Cut my Hours, cut my Pay
give me hours to fritter away.
Makes me think of my 03
and what it does mean to me.
There are some parts on my 03
I wonder what that they could be.
Cut in the receiver, rear mag well
is a slot where these parts dwell.
One is a flat spring, that's plain so see,
the other looks like a pin to me.
The pin goes in a little hole
and up into the receiver from below.
On the pin there is a tit
over the tit the spring does sit.
The pin is kept there by the spring
and it is such a little thing.
These parts are little, very small
and I assume, not strong at all.
On the diagram of the 03
these parts do not appear to me.
These parts, what is it that they do
this is what I ask of you.
What are these parts, what can they be,
    JB could you answer me?

    Regards,
    John

Sure sounds like it is your bolt stop.
But, it also sounds like its broken, since the pin and flat spring are riveted together as one and not separate.

On the underside of the left locking lug you'll see some dimples. With the bolt drawn to the rear , the pin will slip into a dimple. This is enough to keep the bolt to the rear if you tilt the rifle down while attempting to load a cartridge or place in a stripper clip. It was to keep the bolt from screwing up the reload and causing you to get shot over the delay.

With an invitation like that, who could refuse to reply?

Dad and Emmagee have given you correct answers. The part is the bolt stop and, as Emmagee pointed out, was intended to hold the bolt open for reloading when pointed slightly downward.

        Hope this helps.

        J.B.

Thank You all for the replies.
Now I know what the part is, what it is for, and that the one I have is broken.
I was able to order a replacement from Sarco.
          Thanks Again. John
