1903 bayonet lug band (mounting to stock)?

I just got an 03 Springfield. I'm not really familiar with these guns; I'll say it's in really nice shape, but the stock has been sanded and varnished. The problem I want to ask about is the metal band at the front of the barrel (with bayonet lug) is not held in place... it just slides right off the front.

There is a screw hole in the metal band, but no hole in the stock for a screw to go through. So, do I just need to drill a hole through the stock and purchase & install a screw, or do I have the wrong band at the front of the stock?

    Thanks!

Sounds like you have a stock that never had a front barrel band installed or a sport type stock.
All military used stocks should already have the front barrel band retaining screw already drilled.
Here is a picture showing the details.

Surplus military replacement stocks typically don't have the front band screw hole drilled. Pictures would help.

As the late Turner Kirkland was fond of saying, "If you want good oats, you have to pay the price. If you'll take oats that have already been through the horse, those come cheaper."
