What does the "A" mark/letter on a front sight blade mean? this is on a Remington 1903A3.

Dear BudT:
The "A" refers to the height of the blade, the front sight blades were made in several heights to aid in the elevation zeroing for the rifle at the makers.
Basically the rifle was assembled and take to a test range and set in a rest, and the rear sight set for a known distance. the rifle was fired and the results were read and if the grouping met the specification, the rifle was passed as ready to be shipped, if the height of the group was off, a different front sight blade was used to get it within the specifications.
