    photos for cplnorton

Steve, I can not sell the shovel cover because the rifle goes with it ! I doubt the receiver and barrel are from the USS MISS. The stock has a nice DAL cartouche too, barrel is SA 7-29 with a nice bore.

How common is it to have the ship stamped in the stock? I would assume it is fairly rare.

      USN markings

Sometimes you find them and some are another type of marking not related to a ship

The stock with the white letter A is also marked TENN and the serial number is 825055 with a SA 3-18 bbl, this came from the CMP years ago and could be a USN rifle ?

Thanks for the picture! I've seen them with rack numbers like that before but I assumed it was some sort of Greek marking. Are those markings usually an indication of Navy use?
        Thanks,

Well I have a solution, sell me the shovel cover and the rifle both.

Man that is a neat combo there.

By the way I think you said in the other post they were WWI production shovel covers. They are actually made by the Marine Corps Depot. So they call them Marine Depot Made Shovel Covers. They are sort of hard to find. I've been looking for one for a while.

                shovel covers

Steve, I could be wrong, but I thought the off-set hanger was USMC

Also on the USS Wyoming cover notice the MD stamp - I was told that means something ?

Heres a 1909 Rock Island with a TENN marked stock, stock has eagle head inspection stamp from 1918, stock is most likely not original to the rifle, but came with the rifle and looks to have been together for a while, rifle is almost all 1909. Also have a Honolulu marked stock like RCS, unfortunately no rifle to put in it.

interesting cartouche on USS WEST POINT stock

Not a rare cartouche but not that common, found a correct barrel and receiver (I think) SA 1.47 mil with a SA 9-35 bbl.

Do you have a photo of your HONOLULU stock ? mine has both D.A.L. and SA over SPG cartouches

M.D could refer to Marine Division.

Yeah that type of Hanger is Marine Depot Made. Also the straps and stitching on the front is a dead giveaway of Marine Depot made shovel covers.

On the MD, that stands for Marine Detachment. When Marines serve on ships, they were called Marine Detachments. So I'm guessing that is what the MD stands for. It would make sense.

I think my ancestry account just expired. If it didn't' I could look up that Marines name on the back and tell you everywhere he served.

                            another possible USN stock ?

This single bolt Rock Island stock (faint cartouche too) came out a large group that was sold at auction by RocK Island in the 1990's. I was able to purchase the stock from the dealer with a handguard without clips and marked S.

This stock had white paint in the A T 21 markings which I removed - I kind of doubt the army
would mark a stock like this ?

Heres a few pictures of the Honolulu Stock

I got the stock off ebay, came with handguard, bands and buttplate, unfortunately according to the owner the rifle that was once in it was sporterized sometime in the 60s.
