How to determine original branch of issue.

Is it possible to determine original branch of issue by serial number?

Yes, if an SRS record exists. Otherwise, you're mostly out of luck.

Thanks John: Excuse my ignorance; but what is an "SRS Record"?

Springfield Research Service maintains records on about 5-7% of U.S. military weapons. They are "snapshots" and only show where a weapon was at a certain point in time. In many cases, they are receipts showing who bought National Match and NRA Sporters, as well as a few other special types.

Thanks Rick. Was just wondering to what service this rifle was issued to when it was new.

Sub Vet, post some pictures of your rifle- it may be able to help some of the experts on here to give you a good idea as to likelihoods.

Post the serial number here and someone could probably look it up for you.
