Here are pictures of two different butt plates. As you can see, the trap cover one is much smaller than the other. It also has assembly numbers on both parts. Can someone explain why there is a difference?

The small door (numbered one) is early production. -
The small trap buttplate is a carry-over from Krag production and was used on very early rod bayonet rifles. But as production was starting, a decision was made to adopt the oiler and thong kit, which wouldn't fit well in the small trap. So the trap was enlarged shortly thereafter.
