srs showsl 1903 #309121 as follows: 052832 Consulate TREBIZONE It is not shown to be RI so would be a Springfield Armory made rifle. I don't know what the odds would be that they left of the RI in the listing.

It does happen - I have SA #78180 which got an SRS "hit" as serving with the 10th Cavalry in the early 1920s. In reality, the rifle was in private hands starting about 1908. The SRS listing is obviously for RIA #78180. It would be interesting to know how many "Springfields" listed in SRS are in reality RIAs.

        Rick,
I did not know that SRS bothered to differentiate from RI and SA at all. Do some entries list specifically RIA rifles ?

        Loy,

Are there any other USMC features to your rifle besides parkerizing and the dink in front of the S.N. ??
I have a SA USMC rifle with a 9/27 barrel. Also have a RI USMC rifle in the S.N. range of yours. Don't remember the barrel date on it.

Yes, they do. Here's a sample:

I did contact SRS with my evidence that #78180 they list is undoubtedly a Rock Island, but they weren't interested.

That's pretty messed up for them to be like that. Frank Mallory would've been Very appreciative of that information.

It was "hard" information - I did the research on this rifle for a magazine article and, with the help of friends and family of the original owner, established that the rifle had been in private hands the whole time. I agree that SRS has gone downhill since Franklin Mallory passed away.

If I was a Gazillionaire, I'd try to purchase the records from SRS and reestablish it again under the guidance and management of someone who'd be more in tune with collectors. With a Really Nice income too!

                    RCS: Nada to both, unfortunately.

Having had experience digging through records in the National Archives, the manufacturer is seldom listed with the serial number in Ordnance documents. It wasn't until many years later that the Chief of Ordnance issued a directive to report manufacturer with the serial number. And even then, it wasn't always followed.

Frank Mallory captured the data just as he found it. He wisely left it up to the reader/rifle owner to sort it out.

Generally, I agree it is best to leave "data" along (and I also understand the difficulty of differentiating SA from RIA). However, I feel SRS should be a little more "amenable" when presented with "hard" researched data, such as I had.

Well especially that one, since it is a Springfield so to speak.

Duplicate serial numbers and Springfield Armory
                              Things I know:
The US Cavalry was the best at documenting whether a rifle in their possession was of SA or RIA,especially since their consolidation by Congress' mandate in 1920.The problem became most evident to SA in the late 1920 with complaints of duplicate
number rifles during inventories, which SA made mandatory because of serious inspection procedure not being followed .In some cases SA drew back the RIA and replaced it with a SA.SA decided to fix this problem, forever ,as they thought, by sending the RIA rifles to places they would never come back into their system. The best places were the USMC and long overseas assignments of US troops.
Frank Mallory did a incredible job ,since he used a pencil and a yellow legal pad to keep numbers.I firmly believe it could not be done again unless you had a few life times to try it.
I know nothing about SRS today and how it works.
                              Respectfully submitted
