Need help with 1903 front sight Please

    Hi
I have an older friend that has a very nice 1903 springfield Rifle. Because of older failing eyesight he has a problem using the peep sight on the sliding tangent sight and he wants to use the the main battle sigh but it shoots a lot high at 100 & 200 yards. I am told this is the way it was made to do.

My question here is can a higher front sight from a latter model be installed without any problems coming up. I beleive the later model is a 1903A3.

Any help on this matter will be much appreciated.

    Thanks Graydog

The Battle Sight is set for over 500 Yards. Tell your friend to use the Triangular Opening, known as the Field Sight. It has a notch just like on the battle sight but in the all the way down position, it is set at 100 Yards and can be adjusted upwards for any range he'd like to shoot.

Or replace the front sight blade with a repro USMC sight . It is for M1903s ( A3s are different ) and is taller and thicker . It will give him a 200 yd zero on the battle sight . You might also have him try the USMC rear slide . It has only one large ( #10 ) peep in it . It was made for jungle ( low light ) conditions . He might be able to see through it better . They're not that expensive .

If your friend can't use the aperture rear sight which he doesn't have to focus on, I have no idea how he can see the rear sight on a 1903. The aperture rear sight actually brings the front sight into sharper focus.

Well , I have never been able to shoot the '03 with the peep . Always had to use the " tree ". Now , the A3 is a complete different story . Could get 3/4 inch or better out of a good rifle / load back when my eyes were younger . And I had better than 10/20 vision back then.
