Would or could a 2/42 barrel be original to a late production 1903 with a serial number of 1534161. If so what would the other expected characteristics be? I know that some of the later high number receivers were used to replace scrapped low number rifles and/or were built with parts that had been salvaged from scrapped rifles so would this be true for a rifle this late as well?

(1) Yes.Would or could a 2/42 barrel be original to a late production 1903 with a serial number of 1534161. If so what would the other expected characteristics be? (2) A Type C or Scant Stock having an unboxed hand-stamped 3-letter inspection stamp with periods.
(3) Receivers between S/N 1275767 and S/N 1530000 were used for replacements as you describe. Receivers above S/N 1530000 were turned into Ordnance Stores in 1940 unassembled and were not assembled until 1942 using available parts. A 1942-dated barrel would be original.
Hope this helps.
