    First Matching Mod 98

Gents I just picked up my first matching 98. All the parts including screw heads are stamped with serial and waffenampt. I have several questions. There are some markings around the barrel and I wonder if any of you guys know what they mean.

    The markings are as follows:
    cxm354 4ob
These marks are about 1/2" infront of the front of the reciever and wrapped around the barrel. the wood on the right side covers up after the b.

There are also what appears to be a 1 and a scripted p h.

    any help would be appreciated.

These are the marks for the barrel maker, who furnished it to the assembling facility for completing a new rifle (or rebarreling an old one). I have a JP Sauer 98k (ce 43) which has a barrel with the commercial logo for Geco. However, I think "cxm" was the three digit German ordnance code for Geco (Gustav Genschow). Not uncommon. Congratulations on getting an all-matching rifle.

Link will take you to another forum with a posting directed toward cxm.

These marks usually have the date in that code---I will guess your rifle was made in 1944 (at least barrel was).
You can never go home again.
