what is the overall length of the rifle? How long is the barrel, measured from the face of the closed bolt to the muzzle?

You might try doing a search on one of the auction sites for a "mauser carbine" and see what comes up.

Sounds like a 1916 Spanish short rifle..also encountered in .308/7.62 cetme..converted from 7mm by the Spaniards.

I own a couple of these..google 'Spanish 1916 rifle' and see if that's what the Mauser is.
