    Canteen ID and Info

A prominent member of my small home town served in WWI. When he passed a good family friend purchased a number of items from his estate. One of the items is a canteen that I presume is of military origin. (the estate included his uniform an various other issued items). I don't know for sure if the canteen is related to his service or just something he acquired later. If it helps, he was a medical doctor when he joined and served as such. I'd appreciate anything that can be shared about the canteen.

Thank you JBinIll. Using your information I narrowed my internet searching and it seems that there are some images of similar looking canteens listed as German Medical canteens.

Sorry the pictures are not better and I don't have a way to take more. The marking on the can appears to be WMF16.
