Oak Ammo Box

How do I remove the leather handle from my oak ammo box? I see wood plugs on each side,
are there screws on one side or the other? The box has been painted orange, so needs a total
refinish and rebuild. Disassembly is necessary, so any "how to" info is helpful to keep me from
wrecking it. Interior is good and still shows the 3 round black picture in the baseboard.

There are two metal pins holding the strap on. The wooden plugs are to hold the pins in. I do not know if the plus are tappered or not. You may have to drill them out , but I'd think it's prob'ly tap it one way till the plug falls out , then the other way to remove the 2nd plug and the pin.

I have drilled one side being carefull as to drill size(not oversize) and used a long punch to drive the rod and other plug out. Be somewhat carefull as the rod are usually rusted. Hope this helps.
