Dating a model 11 from a serial number?

Is there any way to date a model 11 from the serial number? It does not have the original barrel as it went through a rebuild at SAA. Is there a way to use the serial number to date the receiver? I don't have the exact serial as I type this but IIRC it is in the 480,000 range which should put it around 41 or 42?

It's likely a 1943 gun. The date code on the barrel (2 or 3 letters) might give you a time frame when it was made.

Thanks for the comments. I got the serial number, 482357. The barrel number does not match the serial and the barrel code is BL which puts the barrel at January 42. It's a 26" full choke. The stock has the FJA and ordnance wheel and also a SAA rebuild stamp. It has the Sportsman front end. I am wondering if it was rebuilt by SAA to this configuration. I recently picked up another model 11, this one is an original Riot gun with all matching numbers, barrel code dates that one as July 43 with a serial 496xxx . With that one being 1943, I was thinking the other one must be 41 or 42 with a serial that's 14K earlier?

The Model 11s I have data on in the 480,xxx serial number range have barrels dated around March or April 1943.

463324 is a matching numbers model 11. Yours is most likely a 43.

Sorry for the late reply, but I happen to own a Remington Model 11 "Military Finish" model with serial number 482114. The serials are all matching (receiver, barrel, tang) and it has barrel code "AM" which corresponds to March (A) 1943 (M). During that period, Model 11 production was pretty steady around 2200 to 2500 units per month, which presumably was their maximum capacity. On that basis, I would bet that your shotgun (482357) was made within a few days of mine.
