So what you are searching for is a Colt 1917 with JMG inspectors stamp from about serial number 29,700 to about 64,000 the mark of Colonel John M. Gilbert (JMG) is this right ? I think some may have not known what you were seeking.

That's exactly the way I should have stated it! I'd like to match a JMG marked 1911. Thank you for clarifying.

I wonder if there is story behind those four " notches " ?

just look like scratches...... ... the grips weren't numbered to matched the numbers on the butt........ matched the numbers on the inside of frame under the crane..... accident or embellishment... who knows...........

I don't think these notches got there accidentally, there is some significance to them. Yes the numbers on the grips match the Colt serial number not the military number. It is a very nice revolver but there doesn't seem to much interest in the auction.

I decided to send both 1917's to jackthedog, they will probably be listed in a couple weeks. Thanks for the feedback all.

IMHO the price is a bit steep, for me anyway.
