    Obama Approved the Bump Stocks in 2010

    The "bump stocks" that supposedly were used in the Las Vegas shooting were approved by the Obama administration in 2010.

    I had heard about them for decades and thought they were illegal, but I'm not sure about that.

    In any case Obama approved them. This was Obama's ATF, a Dem controlled House and a Dem controlled Senate.

      They were approved because they were supposed to be for the "handicapped". That one has never been explained to me, handicapped how? how do they fix the handicap problem? why not a special permit to have one, like a parking permit? They have not been around for decades! Technically they do not change the basic operation of the semi-auto gun, minus the stock, a technical decision, based on how the law is written.

          I believe you are thinking of the pistol arm brace.

          The new clarification states, “an NFA firearm has not necessarily been made when the device is not reconfigured for use as a shoulder stock – even if the attached firearm."

              Technically speaking it looks like a modified stock has been a recent addition to the bump-fire group.

              I recall devices such as the HELL-FIRE from the late 1980s/early 90's period. (different method to achieve same result)

              There were many of these old bump-fire devices, here's another - patent filed in 1998.

              An accelerating assembly effectively to increase the cyclic rate at which the trigger of a semi-automatic firearm can be actuated to discharge the weapon. The firearm has a supporting device, a receiver housing supported from the supporting device, a trigger and trigger mechanism secured to the receiver housing. The accelerating mechanism incorporates structure that permits the receiver and the trigger to translate rearwardly a predetermined distance with respect to the supporting device in response to the recoil imparted by the discharge of the semi-automatic firearm. A biasing arrangement continuously urges the receiver, and trigger, to translate forwardly with respect to the supporting device substantially that same predetermined distance.
