I think that situation is pretty much national. Our local schools are filled to capacity with "free loaders". Our State's welfare payout is approching the National Debt!

Or and WA are full of hippies and hillbillies. Beautiful places, but they attract weirdos.

Local governments were financially rewarded for signing up people for food stamps during the Obama days. That, combined the misguided concept that a basic human right is to be provided with food, housing, higher education, cell phones, health care, etc.

Don't typically pay much attention to Britebart for the same reason I don't typically pay any attention to the msm, mother jones, huff-puff, etc. But, looking at what the article states, OR SNAP increased ... same as AK, KY and MT. Would think it worthwhile consider why OR went up 1.6% while AK went up 14%. As well would make sense to look at movement in other similar states, i.e., compare apples to apples. Comparing OR to CA would be irrelevant. The recent recession was wide spread. Recovery was and remains very much uneven. Given that OR is not blessed with much beyond ranching and farming, it makes sense that it and similar locals would be lagging in the now much trumpeted recovery.

Another question would be to find out how the SNAP usage is driven by elderly and disabled citizens.

Efforts to boost enrollment in SNAP by qualified individuals is not a bad thing. If a person is qualified for SNAP, they need to be in it. It is no different than someone who qualifies for SSI disability, etc. If they qualify, they need to be included. Cannot see anything to be gained by excluding otherwise qualified persons. In my area a lot of the residents are retired military. Some are doing fine. Some ... we carry them Meals On Wheels, etc. There is no different from anyone else. If they qualify for SNAP, I encourage them to get enrolled. Can understand that a lot of these men would resent being told they were on food stamps. Maybe that's the reason the program name is SNAP. There is no reason for otherwise qualified people not to be enrolled, regardless of if they live in OR or ALA, MS, etc. Sincerely. bruce.

Probably easier to sign up for food stamps than to enroll a child in school. Here in NJ they actually do check that the child actually resides in the district.
How many food stamp recipients are unwed mothers ?
