When your Sherman Tank is upside down ...

Have a nice cup of tea.
What else can you do ? It's too heavy to flip
    it right way up.

Note that one of the people taking tea is an American -- probably the instructor. He's telling the Brits, "I TOLD you not to push the ATR button!"

My favorite gets short shrift, the M3 Gen. Lee. But it's the true star of my favorite WW II movie, "Sahara," with Bogart assisting.

The M3 was a temporary measure. At the time, American industry couldn't make large castings -- and they wanted a cast turret. So the M3 had a small turret with a 37mm gun, and a sponson (hull-mounted) 75mm gun. One of its great disadvantages was that it could not fight from hull defilade -- because that would mask the 75mm gun, which was its main armament.

It makes up for that slight disadvantage in its awesome appearance.

I think the Brit on the right is saying to the GI, "I think if we just clean up this part and put it back in, it should run ok",

The evidence is the Germans were in no way intimidated by the M3's appearance. Particularly when the Panzers were hull down and looking at the M3 through their gun sights.

Besides, the M3 with riveted/welded hulls were not a match against any German tank!

Maybe; but it didn't save them in North Africa, even with the advantage of the greatest tank tactician of the war.

For some reason my browser won't allow me to open the site. Is this the photo in question?

                      Simple answer. It's five O'clock.

Are we certain that's a Yank having tea with Tommy Adkins? That could be another version of the RAC tanker helmet. Looks as though he's wearing Limey boots and gaiters too.

Rommel was gone by the time the Americans landed in North Africa, and we had a different tank -- the M4 Sherman.

Forgive me Vern, but I do believe Rommel was at Kasserine Pass.

You're right. When he failed to break the Americans, he turned on the British at Medeline, failed there, and left Africa, supposedly with an infected sinus.
