Robbing the WW2 Watery Graves ...

Amazing to what depths these despicable plunderers will go.

And how about the archeologists who plundered the tomb of Tut Ankh Amon?

How many of the ships are on the War Graves list? All sentiment aside, and I am not sympathizing with grave robbers, but when does a ship become salvage?
What of other ships from other eras which have gone down with huge loss of life? Viking ships, the Vasa, the Royal George.... What of ancient graves? Native burial sites, the tombs of the Pharaohs... Why wasn't the CSS Hunley declared a war grave?
Is the term 'archeological' enough to justify salvage operations?

Sunken US warships NEVER become available for salvage -- they are retained on the Navy list in perpetuity.

I happen to know the guy who found the USS Cumberland -- sunk in Hampton Roads by the CSS Virginia. The Navy threatened to prosecute him for taking artefacts (china ware from the mess deck) -- and then ran a dredge through the site, destroying the Cumberland for ever.

Exactly... Dig them up and sell the copper and other salvage... What difference it make now whether they do it today or 100 or 1,000 years from now. We have kneelers pissing on our veterans from every war we have ever fought... Including Iran, Afghanistan Vietnam, Korea,WWII, WWI, and especially those that fought and died in the Civil War.

I have quit wearing my U.S. Navy hat. I am tired of being pissed on.

If she went down with crew members, she's a grave
              and should not be disturbed.
But these days there's nothing sacred anymore including
              statues of war heroes.
