    Does a real man....

Walk in front of or behind a woman or women? Talking about wife, daughter, female coworker, etc.

    Context?

I'd let a well dressed woman enter a room first in a social setting. Encountering a group of adult males on a forest trail I am definitely in lead position.

Re: OP. He conducts himself with respect to all. He opens doors, etc. for women regardless of who they are or how they look. Some types of construction make it difficult to open a door w/o stepping in front of a woman. Have to use ones best judgment. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

There is a well know (but maybe not true) story of the journalist who was in North Africa after WWII and noted a camel caravan passing by in an unusual order. The women were in the front instead of in their normal place at the real of the caravan. He was so surprised at this that he approached the leader and asked why he was breaking a thousand years of tradition and custom by letting the women go first. His answer was simple: he was worried about the abandoned land mines.

I'll probably catch hell for this, but I'm 80, was raised VERY properly as regards treatment of ladies, etc., but one of my pet peeves is that since a certain proportion of the female population is very nasty about "equality" I find it strange that they still, very much, expect the little courtesies of old. Oh, I still do what's "right", but not always with the clear sense of duty that I once had - just another facet of the coarsening of society.

            What about next to ?
In the rain, near the curb to protect her from splashes.
In the dry, on the inside to protect her from emptied piss pots

Unless she is addressed as Your Majesty be in front to open doors, shield her from strangers, and block intrusions from her. Of course, a co-worker may use that as an excuse to raise hell so use your judgement.

Side by side in public with the man to the right or to the curb side of the road, going in front only to open doors or any situation similar. Going into crowds or restaurants etc. man should walk in front but not run off and leave her.

My belief is the man walks behind in some situations because that is the best defensive position. You can see what is coming and you can protect the rear. I think on the side to protect from puddle splashes, etc is correct also.

Jim has the correct modern procedure. In the rear position, one can catch the purse snatcher "on the rise". Sporting, you know. Regards, Clark
