I know an Iranian immigrant, now has a green card. Will make a good citizen, IMO. By his own admission, not a very good Muslim. The young people there have had Conservative religious dogma crammed down their throats since birth, and they're tired of it. But they're also proud of their civilization, which was up and running when the tribes in the west wore bearskins and communicated with each other by grunts and gestures. I sometimes wonder if we're backing the right group of despots in Iranian/Arab strategic rivalry.

We're backing the side, whatever its faults, that did not hold Americans as hostages, or conspire in blowing up the Marine barracks in Lebanon.

IMO, backing any of them is a mistake.

True but how many Iranians were involved in 9/11? Their government is a brutal military dictatorship ruling through a claimed religious mandate, and it will never be a friend to the US, but rather than seeing all Persians in the same pot I wish our government was better at exploiting the degree to which that government alienates its own people.

If the dancing was hip-hop, they should’ve been arrested.

I agree. We seem many a time to back the wrong group.

                Rave on you crazy Arabs!

In Iran, that must be akin to Quakers being exposed to Gay Santa here?

Another good example of social media getting people in trouble.

                    From the article

"The individuals detained for illicit drinking and dancing could theoretically be put to death under Iranian law, but they are more likely to face punishments such as fines, jail terms, or lashes."

Their version of the "Swing Kids" of Nazi Germany. Hey, it's a totalitarian country. Nazi Germany or Stalin's USSR or Mao's China with a Shi'ite Muslim veneer.

So, the more things change, the more they remain the same.
