I understand what you're saying, but economically, the picture is a little different. Ruined blue states like NJ and CA carry the federal budget to the benefit of red States like AL. And within most states, the bluer areas subsidize the red ones in state expenditures.

I have lived in New Jersey since 1961 and I have never heard ANY politician-especially a liberal one-blame the state's financial problems on it being a tax exporter.
