    What the Hell is a "do-rag" ? ...

Baggy pants and hoodies I know about, but do-rags ?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ress-code.html

So, because of the ensuing hullabaloo the dress code incited,
it's now OK to go bowling in baggy pants, hoodies
    and the mysterious "do-rags".

Do I really want to know ?

Only if you need another reason to hate what passes for mainstream culture; I have too many now.

The first time(and it's been fifteen yrs now) I saw a "tough" biker wearing a hanky I nearly laughed out loud. My mom(like Rosy the riviter) wore a 'kerchief when she was doing housekeeping. 'tell you the truth, it kind of make sense. It's low friction and keeps your hair in place and bugs out. I wouldn't wear one. The droopy pants thing make no sense(do they still do that? I don't live near a 'hood).

Do-rag? Back in the day some guys called them "Dew rags". We tied our 'kerchiefs around and over our heads to keep the friggin' sweat out our eyes while wearing hardhats.

If you live in the South you should know the answer. I'm pretty sure it did not originate from the "Bikers". Back in the thirty's and forties , maybe earlier, the blacks would have their hair "processed" ( a form of hair dressing) . They used a jelly like cream called Royal Crown Hair Dressing and saturated their hair and used a device called a curling or kinking iron that was heated and their hair was combed or designed into a pattern. After everything was cooled down they had something like a permanent. I don't know how long the permanent would last but they called the process a "DO", and would communicate with each other using the term "getting a process '. Needless to say the hair was quite greasy and they would tie a "RAG" around their head while sleeping to protect their" DO " and the pillow from the grease.
Thus came the terminology a "DO RAG". It appears that eventually the RAG was used for looking cool, absorbing sweat. or the Bikers thought it was cool.
I am 80 years old and I witnessed this process a few times. There was a black family that lived in my neighborhood ( we were integrated long before 1950's )and there were 7 kids who practiced this almost every week end. So the original "DO RAG " was used to protect ones hair design.

Obviously, they learned it from their Aunt Jemima. Should point that out to the next one you see.

My B in L had two tours in Nam. It was very often used by soldiers there to keep sweat out of eyes. Do not know how they spelled it buy I think it was dew rag, maybe sounded like do rag. Surprised no Nam vets have spoken up about this.

Jeez, looks like the Army could have come up with something more effective--like the sweatbands I used 50+ yrs ago on construction work in the summer; just a thin sponge about 2 X 12 in. with an elastic band to hold it in place.

Tie one on, then hang out at a biker-bar. Be sure to wear a long sleeve shirt if you don't have full-coverage tattoos.

I did not say it was a issue item, probably the troops coming up with something to solve a problem. GI's are noted for such thinking! I thought Nam was the origin of them but I guess not, seems they have been around before. And yes my B-in-L is a biker but not an outlaw type, but a chartable group for other vets.
