the alarms seem to me like just a way to spread panic. if N Korea did launch, even if the fed gvmnt picked it up instantly you can bet its going to take a few minutes for them to react then notify the local hawaiian officials, who then will probably take a min or two to sound an alarm, which by this time the missile will have struck or be moments from striking. what are you going to do, get under your desk?Comment

When I first heard about it that's what I thought. Hawaii is always a target of the U.S. especially now with NK. The alert announced that people needed to seek immediate shelter. This could have been intentional to make people think what they should do in case of a real threat and where to go to find shelter. Whatever caused it I think a lot of good will come of it. The people there need to take NK seriously. The gov. of HI said not all the alarms went off so there is something there that is broken that no one knew about.
The Civil Defense department said the wrong button got pushed at shift change. You don't press buttons at shift change and you don't press buttons because it is shift change. These buttons are no doubt key locked, guarded or both.Comment

Does anyone here besides myself have a Nuclear Weapons Operations background and FEMA Certifications in Nuclear Accident and Response Operations?
It is highly unlikely that this state command and control facility has a guarded button on the comm panel. I spent 42 months in a Minuteman III ICBM Launch Control Facility and nothing had guard of any kind on them to include the launch switches. They did require you to insert a keys which were contained in a safe with two locks on it. I then spent nine years in SAC Command Posts whose SIOP mission was to assume Command and Control of SAC operations if the SAC Command Center was destroyed. I didn't have guards on any of my buttons there either.
I believe someone was running a checklist and had an oh xxxx moment. xxxx happens.
We as a nation have paid lip service to a robust Civil Defense System for ever. No population centers have real shelter capability to shelter the population from blast or fall out. On a SAC base unless you were in a Minuteman Launch Control Center you had zero chance of surviving a blast if your base was targeted, in fact both operational wings I was a member of had zero plans to operate in a post strike environment. All of my fellow crew members and myself had plans to go topside and watch the show if we ever had to key turn.

I agree with you, what good is a warning if there is no defense? Hawaii is nothing more then a tombstone in the pacific.

No Korea’s claim to be able to hit a target (any target) with a intercontinental guided missile armed with a nuclear warhead is all bluster and bragging by a disillusional lunatic. It is the same tactics used by Saddam, Quadafy, and other wannabe dictators. Trump laughs about the size of the button with good reason. No. Korea could probably kill thousands of it’s neighbors in So. Korea and Japan but at least for now Hawaii is more likely to get hit by a asteroid than from a nuclear missile from No. Korea.
In the first place, if Un Just wanted to kill Americans, military bases in Guam, Japan, So Korea, etc. would make more sense. No matter, any kind of a early warning (as stated) is a myth to start with.Comment

Here’s a distinct possibility
This false alert was not a mistake. It was ordered.
They were originally informed it was to be a drill, but then all information was put out that the threat was real.
Immediate contact was then made to the White House and requests were made for retaliation.
The plan was a push to have the While House approve an attack on foreign vessels off the coast.
When the White House replied "Negative" and demanded further information, their superiors called Gov. David lge where he ordered them to contact media outlets of there being a false alarm. One of the Ige’s aids was present and was speaking with who looked to be a federal investigator.
The plan was to force the White House into one of two possibilities
(1) If the WH didn’t react, which occured, they would declare that “The Trump admin demonstrated weakness and refused to protect his people”
(2) If the White House did react with some kind of action, then they would declare “Unhinged”
Remember this is Hawaii which is probably the most corrupt state in the union.Comment
