What a horrible rotten pair of young bastards ...

They should be charged as adults, plus I don't
understand why the Bees didn't exact their
    own retribution.

No. They should not be charged as adults. They are not adults. The law is not about revenge. It is about justice. Reminds me of a good ole boy who messed up and got hauled up for a drum head court marshall. According to what I heard, he was shaking pretty hard. The officer standing by his side said, "Have no fear son. Here you will receive justice." That good ole boy responded, "Sir it's not justice I seek but mercy!" Happily the bee keepers will be able to recover. Over 800 people have kicked in to see to it that they are able to resume operations come spring. The two miscreants will be punished according to the law. That is enough. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

What goes around comes around. A rancher mentioned when he was a kid he shot up the tin roof in an old barn shooting at bats or sparrows. Later he bought the neighboring ranch and he said he then had to repair the shot up cover.

Locking away won't help that is easy. Now community service is another story and teach a lesson at the same time. This is a serious offense, if possible their "free" time is spent in working in the local community such as washing cop car/fire trucks/sanitation vehicles. Lawn maintance for the town or county. Working in the dog shelter cleaning kennels...the list is endless. Putting people in lockup is a waste of time, having them work is better. If the parents are problems as well, perhaps the judge could persuade them to help the kids as well.

Community service is a very good way of teaching such miscreants a important lesson. Washing cars ... Nope! Cutting grass? Nope! Blaming the parents? Nope! Give each of these boys a little county issue orange jump suit and a sling blade and put them to knocking down weeds, brush, etc. Give them shovels and wheelbarrows and put them to cleaning out the curbs, storm drains, etc. of grass, weeds, dirt that cause drainage problems. Let them ride on the back of garbage trucks doing trash pickup from residences/businesses. And ... let them wear their fashionable orange jump suit to school ... until their term of community service is completed. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

If it had been warm weather they would have, but they and other insects are not responsive in the cold. They froze, that is what killed them!

Bees tend to go lethargic at 50 or 55F (don't recall). In colder weather they hunker together in the center of the hive. Open that hive and... They can't even fly to a warmer place.

A possibility is that they are young sociopaths, in which case they are beyond earthly redemption. What is done to them is irrelevant except for what it says about our society.

It could also be they were once stung and simply decided "Let's get them!". Hopefully they are just mischievous pre-teens and they learn a lesson about the damage they did to other people. I'm told that in Polish, the bee is the only insect referred to in the same vein as humans. Most folks understand them. Those who don't tend to panic.

Perhaps it might be useful for them to have to pay reparations, a debt that must be paid (including interest) by say their 21st birthday and one that can't be erased by bankruptcy.

They should walk free and clear... and then run for the U.S. Senate along with Bradley Manning and Rosie O'Donnell. Their daddy's were Democrats and Democrats do not have to obey either God's laws or Man's law.

Regardless of what he give us, there is a kernel of truth to his statement.

I've raised bees and there is some problems with the numbers in the article. Judging from the pictures in the article the hives wouldn't bring $600 a piece much less than the $1200 stated and hives this time of the year only have about 20 thousand bees each not 100 thousand.
