That my solution is to erase borders. That's hogwash and you know it, but such is your bombastic debate style.

Setting aside all personal differences, I see where everyone involved in this thread has made some valid points depending upon their own experiences and perspectives. The system is running on a myriad of individuals having their own axe to grind to those having total indifference with nothing to grind at all.
As Sam pointed out there are three sides and I believe each of those can wander off on different tangents. From Federal department heads to the local case workers it appears the interpretations vary all the way down the line. Each one saying they are doing their job, yet the results are all over the place. Quotas....naturally it's easier to fill quotas in a large city than it is a sparsely populated county.

Pete (my Polack) was an HVAC construction contractor. A WW2 reenactor who owned a trio of WW2 era vehicles and a good family man. APPARENTLY after he bought the house a few doors down from me years ago, INS had sent a letter to his old apartment which was never forwarded. When he didn't appear there was said to be a warrant issued. When he did his scheduled check-ins at immigration it never came up. He had just renewed a year earlier prior to being flagged on a traffic stop.
There must be some extenuating circumstances involved which are not being made known? Very possible. Was there some doctoring of books on the business level? Perhaps some ghost employees with fake ID's and credit cards? I don't know. When his eldest son finally hit 21 a few years back he tried to sponsor Pete's return to the USA. His dog was cleared to move but he wasn't. Stranger $hit has happened.

Under then Reagan amnesty, I mentioned Eliseo who had earned my trust as a friend only to discover he had been lying to all of us about everything for years. Even his name! (bye-bye) Two others came here illegally from Guatemala and Honduras. After the amnesty they are still the same people and are still friends. The majority of my immigrant friends are all here legally and are actually proud of that. Several years ago when Sonya got her US citizenship we had an impromptu street party in her honor. Waving her little American flag all evening and telling everyone that she could now vote.
I can go on forever here about similar/same situations over the years.

Now here is the big picture and one which frightens me. All of them who came here legally despised the border jumpers. Voted more conservative or moderate. Now....minds they are a-changing with the more recent propaganda. They seem to be slowly shifting towards being sympathetic to the border jumpers and are leaning more Democrat. As one of my Columbian buds told me, it isn't worth becoming a citizen yet because he'd be throwing away too many perks. Once the perks are gone he'll take his test, but that day isn't going to be here in the near foreseeable future.

Let's get on the same page and fix a broken system first. Who's here and is now legal, let them stay. Others we should hunt down and show them the exit.

Ya need to be a little more specific on the "Perks" there JB. ... ,does that mean perks he receives here in the US that are greater because he is a legal resident but not a citizen....

sorry... I have my doubts on that one Sir

Apparently the good doctor has had numerous run in's with our traffic enforcement policies coupled with his other legal entanglements. A local might have bought this to ICE attention, hence the pickup placed. As a citizen he might lose his driving privileges and fines at worst. Couple this with his other legal problems and green card status the feds have decided to take a closer look. IMHO his pattern shows anti-social tendencies regardless of his social standings. One of the "understandings" of a green card is to be on your best behavior, he wasn't. What befuddles me is why he never became a citizen and avoid these types of issues. From the looks of things Poland will now be enriched with a returning citizen of theirs, not ours. If I was a holder of a green card I would do nothing to attract attention. As Willie once said, "A moving foxhole attracts the eye."

Perks. Not direct handouts but there are certain advantages at certain times.

It comes under how they play the system. Certain loopholes in tax laws (at least on the local level) originally designed to help immigrants get started on firm footing. Also in the way they are hired and paid vs. declared income etc. The particulars I'm unsure of as they are hush-hush in a shrewd sort of way.
Years ago I worked with a Bosnian 'refugee' who had fewer deductions on his paycheck for reasons he wouldn't clearly explain to me. He also lived in an affluent suburb in a home I surely couldn't afford by working the same job. Then it was due to his status and he had a limited number of years to take advantage of it "but after that there are other ways" or so he said.

I realize the laws change, but like welfare whores and corporate bean counters they stay pretty well informed as to how to get the most. I'm sure if you dig into it you may find something. City/county/state property tax exemptions etc. based on immigration status and/or how the property is titled. I know there are illegal ways such as being hired on a 1099 reflecting lower income than actually received. Getting breaks on new business startup which are intended to fail before starting anew as something else under someone elses name. (taking turns being boss and employee).

It may not seem advantageous in the long run to you or I, but to them it does. It seems to work for them too for what its worth.
