The country was largely financed by profits from high oil prices. Everyone benefited. About like Alaska... every year state cuts a check to each citizen. Like out west where many areas are having marginal bits of oil/gas developed ala fracking. Lots of supply. Good while it lasts. But all that excess supply ... prices crash. People in the oil fields loose their good jobs. Many others in the areas also loose their jobs. Tough. No different in Venezula where many folks had good lives supported by profits from the once high prices of oil. Then, the price of oil crashes. Nation hasn't got a lot to fall back on. Not much market for oil workers turned burger flippers. So ... the ones that can head elsewhere. They won't stop with Columbia. Sooner or later ... coming to a state, city, house near you. JMHO. The one and only way to make it tougher is to use harsh extreme laws and penalties to punish the people who hire illegal aliens and the people who rent houses/apartments to them. Cut off access to a place to work and a place to reside ... that will accomplish two things. Illegal aliens will not be able to work or have a residence. That will make it one hard hill to climb for them to stay in this country. As well ... it will force businesses/employers to pay US citizens a wage driven by actual market forces, ie., demand and supply ... without supply of labor being inflated by the presence of illegal aliens willing to work for lesser wages. That's what they prefer, but those hired to work in such places as big packing houses & fish processing plants (where damned few US citizens will work) probably get paid by check; at Tyson, Swift, etc. the paymaster doesn't count out dollar bills.

I once planned to hire some for yard work & intended to pay cash, as I always do for any kind of house repair work (because even Americans prefer to be paid "off the record" so they won't have to declare it as income), but balked when I was told I would have to provide their lunches! Why? Because it was the custom where they came from! So I said forget it.
