    Interesting article

    An interesting article:

An increasingly ritualized form of violence is attracting unexpected perpetrators.

    Great read Jim!

    From the article:

But what if the way to explain the school-shooting epidemic is to go back and use the Granovetterian model—to think of it as a slow-motion, ever-evolving riot, in which each new participant’s action makes sense in reaction to and in combination with those who came before?
This gets at the observation that once upon a time, stuff like this didn't happen. It can be extended to shootings beyond the school building.

The end game, I suspect, is tight regulation on firearms. 300 million of them in the country? Amazon tracks that many items in a single day. With technology, not a problem. That's where we're headed.

Sobering, to say the very least.

And predictive -- we can expect more and more of this crap. But no good ideas of what we can do about it.

Perhaps some serious research on the long term effects of recreational drug use on the brain ? Especially juvenile ones.

The civilian version of the "assault rifle" may have had its day. Bump stucks and large capacity magazines will likely be banned. Hard to say if it will go much farther than that in the near future.

The case of the autistic (so-called) would-be killer illustrates the same criminal mistakes made in dealing with the Florida killer--everybody in the social service, medical, & legal systems bending over backwards to look after HIS welfare, no serious consideration given to his potential victims. Probation for planning such a potential mass-killing??? Unbelievable.

Vern, God Knows we have our differences but I credit you for thinking along these lines. The way I see it, we are a approaching a future as gun owners we can choose between selection or convenience. I'll take selection. I don't want to see bans.

But as the Florida shooter shows, it's devilishly hard to process the bad actors before they go off. This guy went from public nuisance to catastrophic monster in a giant step. If someone is serious about trying to break the cycle of these shootings, then they need to take a serious look at erecting procedural barriers to gun movement. I know that's unpopular, but there is science behind it. As Leftyo points out, right now it's all too easy for criminals to resupply what is lost to the police, or for those who can't clear a NICS check to work around it.

A public nuisance is someone who throws a beer can out the car window. Somebody who tortures animals, injures his own rotten self, makes threats, and all the other reported signs (going back years) of his obviously psychopathic personality, is going only a small step to carry out murder. You're talking exactly like all the other enablers--the doctors, social service workers, even law enforcement, who chose to ignore the red flags & put this monster's interests & welfare above the public welfare.

Interesting how the article decribes an alert lady, seeing suspicious behavior, calls the police who do a good job and prevent a tragedy.
Fate plays a hand.....what if she decided to wait to clean the dishes?

I hear you but it's always easier in hindsight. You know that.

Yep hit the nail on the head, everyone is worried about the poor suspect and no one gives two xxxxs about the victim, actual or potential. Courts let victims speak but have mandated sentences in place, it’s all a dog and pony show. Our priorities are backwards.
