An obscure provision of the law allows the County Sheriff to keep excess food money for themselves at the end of the year. Been that way for decades and strangely despite it being brought to light every few years it seems the legislature can't seem to change it. He is correct in that under state law what he did is legal, not moral, but legal so not sure what the local DA could do about it.

It is a stupid law. The legislators should change it ASAP. The sheriff should be fired ASAP. As well, any other punative measures that can be taken should be taken. He should be made an example of publicly. Idiots like this are one of the reasons so many have so little respect for the police. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

I have a feeling the law was intended to be a perk in the amount of "extra grocery money" for the Sherriff. No reason the inmates should be eating better than his family. The assumption was the monies would be spent on the inmates first.
Poorly written law if it's legal to submit an annual budget for X amount when the inmates are fed gruel and the Sherriff is eating filet mignon and buying property. If they want to close a loop hole, then that's where they should start.
