Telling it like it is................... Citizen lectures his City Council on gun bans.

Hopefully he felt better after that, but, some questions remain unaddressed--

Does society have a legitimate interest in preventing gun ownership by people who would use those guns to commit unprovoked, aggressive violence against others?

If so, how does one devise a regulatory scheme for firearms purchases that accomplishes the goal of the above interest without having some impact on those gun owners who are not the target of the regulations? Is this suppose to wait until everyone has a microchip in them tied to the Master Database? No thanks!

The speaker says he is tired of blamed, but is unspecific about who is doing the blaming, and what form the blame takes. And at any rate, whatever harm he personally feels seems small in comparison to someone recovering from a GSW, or worse, dead from one as a result of "one of these shootings", as he puts it.

My point is....people are waking up to the fact that they have a right to not get shot. We gun owners are going to have to have an answer for that sooner or later.

I know I will upset some people by saying this but by and large the Canadian system does attempt to balance the need for safety from idiots with the needs and desires of the shooting community. To buy a firearm you must first take a short course in firearms knowledge and safety practices. You must then pass a police background check to see if you have a criminal record. You have to have two references and the police will call them to try to discern if you have mental problems or a propensity to violence and if this is all OK you will get a licence that is good for 5 years and that has your photo on it. With that licence you can go to a gun shop or a gun show, show your licence and walk out with a non-restricted firearm (i.e not a handgun) and all the ammunition you can afford. If you do develop a mental problem or get a criminal record the police will cancel your licence and seize your firearms. There are still a number of irritants which I won't go into and the current Liberal government is about to add to the irritants for political rather than safety reasons but when you go to the range you can be reasonably comfortable that the guy on the next bench has at least a basic concept of safety practices and is probably not nuts.

And do you carry your rifle when you take the family out to dinner?

The theory of the handgun is that it is the gun you ALWAYS have with you. If you can't have a handgun, how can you expect to be armed if you or your family members are attacked?

He said what I have said all along. Punish the criminals, and I do mean PUNISH. Where they are not able to or even have the want to after they get what is coming for doing foolish things. Knives, guns, ball bats, tire irons, whatever. The weapon in not the issue, the user is. Fix that problem and all others will fall into place.
And also, that man is an American. Not a black American. Not African American. Just an honest American, one that I can stand with and beside. Proud of him.
