I seriously doubt that many former slaves are still around to collect. If ANY can be documented as former slaves, by all means pay them their due as the person would be entitled to any just compensation from a state treasury.

these people are brain dead. no white person is alive today that owned a slave, and there is no slave left alive for them to pay.

Year ago when I saw this topic mentioned, someone the reparations should be paid to those who can prove they are descended from slaves by those who are proven to have descended from slave owners.
Hmmmm...slavery was outlawed in this country 150 years ago, that's about 5-6 generations ago. Isn't that stretching it a little ?

“Neither one of them give a heck about the black community, only the votes," Chappelle-Nadal said.
At least she got that part right. If she opened her eyes a little wider she might notice the tactic applies across the board and isn't limited to just blacks.
Reparations...to what end? For what practical reasons? Aside from reaching into American white pockets for racist means. Black women had the right to vote in this country well before anyone in my family tree ever did.

Start with the African countries which have already admitted the trade began with them. Then go after the few countries which refuse to acknowledge their practices ever existed in spite of overwhelming evidence. Go to the root of the matter. See how far that goes.

There will be some who will push for free money, but it's back to being all about getting votes again. That woman can't think beyond the tip of her nose....and why is she doing this now? She must be up for reelection!

Missouri wasn't a slave state anyway. And maybe she should take the money she is getting paid from the state and give it to those "single moms with 18 kids" that we are having to pay for and tell them to get their tubes tied.

And then let the descendants of the former slaves pay ME for my great-grandfathers' service in freeing the slaves during the Civil War.

Missouri WAS a slave state, but not part of the Confederacy. There were five slave states that did not join the Confederacy -- Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia.

Yes Missouri was indeed a slave state. They entered the union as a slave state under the terms of the Missouri Compromise. She even sent militia units to both sides during the War.
Regarding 'documented slaves'. How many were actually indentured with terms of compensation? There were more than quite a few who bought their own freedom with their own money. Then we'll go into all the other races involved in indentured servitude and get their families reparations too. Why should it be limited to blacks....and include freemen at that? While we're at it, lets recompense all those families who had members working child labor for next to nil.
I'm sure we can bankrupt the system in short order if we all put our minds to it.

I think I'll take one of those DNA tests to see if I am part African or Native American. I'm tired of thinking I'm a white man and not entitled to anything.

Your white, that means you have obligations instead of entitlements.

Your obligation is to PAY for the entitlements.

One mess which does need attention is settling the 'heirs properties' dispute. At the end of the war, some plantations were parceled out amongst the emancipated slaves. The legal descriptions were more verbal than surveyed, but they were recorded. And now in some places it is a fine mess, as subdivisions spring up on disputed ground.

The American Natives may deserve reparations more than anyone else. That being said, I dont think anyone should receive reparations based on events 150 or more years ago. Time for unilateral just forget it, dont do it again, and move on.

They're GETTING it! In the form of exemptions to laws that apply to everyone else! Tribes are allowed to make a mockery of fish & game laws that apply to everyone else, including unsustainable harvest methods like gill-netting, & killing of "protected" species like bald eagles. Then there's the privilege of opening casinos in states that prohibit gambling, selling un-taxed gas & cigs, and so on.

How the f* can you be a "citizen" of some stone-age "nation" and ALSO the US?
