At the top of the list: got them out of the Dark Continent. They may not themselves have profited (though they were safe, at least, from landing in the stew pot if caught by enemy tribes), but their descendants have profited HUGELY. The poorest among them are rich compared to their relatives "back home."Comment

That's a novel argument, CH, but given the importance you place on heritage, it's fair to say that having theirs gutted in a forced transoceanic migration is a real negative, apart from everything else that happened to them here. Seems realistic to also add that if our modern social fabric was damaged in some catastrophe and services took a giant step backwards, then people in some parts of this country would be looking to bring back the chains.Comment

Ever the apologist - what about the LAST 50+ years, and 3 generations? Bring back the chains? - pure rabble-rousing rhetoric, designed to provoke. Every once in a while we agree, but basically, Vern is right - DFTT.That's a novel argument, CH, but given the importance you place on heritage, it's fair to say that having theirs gutted in a forced transoceanic migration is a real negative, apart from everything else that happened to them here. No force compels them to remain in a land of racism & oppression: they could do what PBS darling Charlene Gault did--emigrate to S. Africa, where, she said, she felt truly "liberated" for the first time in her life. Thought & hoped that was the end of her on PBS. About 5 yrs later, she's back--seems like the crime, corruption, gov't incompetence, that went with native rule was too high a price to pay for her "liberty."Comment

Some choose to stay and fight the racism & oppression (your words), on the logic that their ancestors labored to help make this country, that their birthright is as strong as anyone else's. Unclear if you would have a problem with that or not.No force compels them to remain in a land of racism & oppression: they could do what PBS darling Charlene Gault did--emigrate to S. Since when does Dick Hosmer play Pollyanna and see the good in all humanity? It's the rules of civilization and the threat of a penalty that keep people in check. What I'm pointing out really is a no-brainer. Once people know the cops or the troops aren't coming, things would get real ugly real quick for awhile until some sense of order comes out of it. The thing is, in some places, the order had people in chains. My hunch (especially after reading posts from people like Allen) is that this muscle memory hasn't quite left the body. An unhappy thought? Absolutely. Suddenly our civilization, even with its outlandish chickensh*t PC rules, doesn't seem so bad.Comment
