I would not say anything GOOD or BAD about McCain being a POW. I wasn't there so I couldn't say if he was good or bad.
Just because you are a POW does not make you a hero. He had the MISFORTUNE of getting captured!
I can tell you JUST because you have 3 Purple hearts as I do DOES NOT MAKE ME a hero. I had the MISFORTUNE of getting hit by an RPG on my tank, and getting frags as an infantry man and getting more frags as a recon man in my armored cavalry unit.
I can also tell you that the V A is still screwing around with my compensation rating now and it will be 50 years on aug 24, 2018 !!

Absolute BS. McCain was captured because he violated the rules of engagement. Every single Naval aviator was taught from day one that speed equals life and altitude prolongs it. He was too low and too slow (his fault) and got shot down.

Carrier pilots made sharp distinction between someone who was unavoidably shot down and a pilot that made a mistake (i.e. screwed up).

He screwed up and that does not mean he is automatically a venerated hero

Nothing McCain did as a POW was unusual or more extreme than other POW's.

McCain is no different, no better, than thousands of guys who served. Take Randy Cunningham (AKA The Duke) for example. He was the only Ace in the Vietnam dust up. A true hero, right. NO!!! He wound up as a thief, a liar, and spent time in Federal Prison. Tell me how we should honor him, salute him, and call him a hero... McCain is a liar, a thief, and a despicable human being whether he spent 5 days, 5 months, or 5 years in a POW camp does not matter one cent.

A hero today can and often does become a zero tomorrow. John McCain and his ilk cause 90% of the problems we have today. I met Randy Cunningham and Willie Driscoll in Pensacola Fl. in 1971. He was a prick then and a disaster as a Congressman. John McCain was a prick in 1967 and a disastor while in the Senate.
