A "crime" is something that society says it is and that is why people get incarcerated nothing more. 1880's no one locked up for any drug offense, 1980's many locked up for drug offense, so what changed? 1880's steal a horse/cattle get hanged, 1980's go to jail, again the same thing. Want to do drugs, sure go ahead WITHOUT THE EXPECTATION that society will come to your aid. O.D., bye-bye no Narcan. Steal to support your habit jail/prison. Make prison intolerable, work gangs instead of providing exercise equipment to help build the con's up. Have them earn their keep, the better you work and don't cause trouble the better your food is. Society will reach a breaking point financially and have to decide what is more important and FINANCIALLY FEASIABLE to continue. Uncle Sugar is broke and can't help the kids out, so all 50 will have to make decisions. In our community people won't work because welfare pays so well. Cut welfare people will need to work to live, life is hard.

Same as everywhere else, people on welfare are known to steal that is a given in any society. Togor my friend, you are getting too close to the boundary on the "truce" with your snideness. I probably have more experience in dealing with entitled people then you so I have the knowledge to speak. I had clients who were on welfare and stole to have more. Couldn't get them to do a days work, they would work nights stealing. I would be in court with them to their public pretenders distaste to tell the judge the reality of my client. Welfare is the modern version of the plantation system that traps people into a circle of uselessness. It is not a hand up but a hold back, not what it was intended for and propagated under Barry's regime. In my community is many service jobs that pay just as good or better then welfare and the jobs go begging. I have two friends in the fast food business, one owns all the McDonalds in the county and other is G.M. of the Wendy's in our area and are always hiring. People want the money, they don't want to work for the money. Don't work, don't eat is a simple understanding, stealing in my AO can get you shot in a hurry. The pendulum in the United States is starting to swing back to the right away from the left side of many decades of both parties. Working people are tired of having their pockets picked by government's of all sizes to subsidize handouts to individuals. {Yes, Togor and the other "children" will go on now about corporate welfare as usual.}

Sam no snideness intended. Call it the limits of the low-bandwidth connection. But the issue is real. We pay some people to sit in their building and not cause trouble. That's not productive but in the short run it isn't destructive either, which is why we do it. I don't like it either and wonder much longer it can go that way. But welfare and foodstamps have probably avoided a lot of riots over the decades.

If people are occupied at a work then less trouble can they get into. Mom always said that idle hands are the devils workshop and that is true. Why pay people to look for ways to get into mischief? Public works jobs, pushing a broom, cutting grass, washing windows is better for society then paying people not to work. Want your welfare benefits, here is a job for you to do at 40 hours per week. Kids, no problem other welfare moms can do daycare at a public center while you work. Transportation, no problem we have discarded school buses with drivers to pick you up. If "they" have an excuse, we have an answer! Pretty soon people will realize that private jobs can and will pay better, if not government buildings and grounds will get the maintance that is needed.
