RED - my "hunk of junk" statement was based on my personal knowledge of two Generacs. One is mine the other my neighbor. I have the 15kw gasoline, his is the propane autostart also about 15kw. During the derecho a couple of years ago we lost power for 11 days. Both generacs began to fail about halfway through. Overspeed then shutdown.
The neighbor had 5 service techs come in. Finally figured out it was the stepper motor. I think his is fixed now but I have not heard in run in quite awhile. I suspect my stepper motor is bad also. Not a cheap part.
I would start and run mine at least once per month for about 30 minutes. One day I go out to run it. Starts then stops. Check the oil. Not only overfull, but it has the consistency of kerosene. The entire gas tank drained into the oil sump because a valve spring retainer snapped in half and the valve stuck open. Never seen that before.
Also on mine, major plastic parts basically disintegrate. Metal fasteners strip threads with almost no torque applied. Did some research and at least the newer generacs seem to have issues. Live and learn. It sounds like you got a good one RED so you should be ok. Personally, no more generacs for me.
