Giving credit where it's due ...

Never cared for the guy as an actor and haven't
seen any of his Mission Impossible movies, but
I have to give him credit for this.

    Assuming it's for real.

If it's real, I worked theater for 34 years.

I can't stand Tom Cruise. I will never forget his claim that "making movies was just as dangerous as serving in combat in Afghanistan." What a jackass!

And how can we justify PAYING for this stunt -- the jump was made from military aircraft.

I don't care for Cruise either. Disagree politically and religiously. A flip-flopper. Backs a GOP candidate providing the candidate practices Scientology. Other than that he's a staunch liberal Dem. An Obama and Hillary worshiper and has spoken in favor of gun control.
That having been said I can't help but wonder what the reaction would be if Ted Nugent had made a HALO jump from a military aircraft.

The military has done celebrity involved stunts for decades. It's all part of their Public Relations scheme.
That's probably one reason anti-military Obama cancelled fly-overs during the National Anthem.

That's easy. They'd pray his chute didn't open.

Mmmm....I never had a full face mask with lights to ruin my night vision only oxygen mask and goggles and wrist altimeter. Dangerous? Only if you don't keep your head screwed on straight. Exhaling after pulling the 'green apple' was a challenge sometimes. Oh, and making sure the ruck was pulled up tight.

I'm sure his jump was not an equipment jump and he had a flight surgeon holding his hand all the way to the ramp. He's REMF all the way....

I made a jump from 23,000 feet, pulled at 2000 feet, had only oxygen on demand on flight up, and wore a t-shirt and sweat pants with frap hat and goggles out a King Air. But, boy, he is really a wild man and so brave. It was fun with a long freefall, but I'm with PWC, it's only dangerous when not paying attention. And I have also made a jump out of a C-130, Bell 412 helicopter, several Twin Otters, CASA's, and the list goes on. He did nothing great. Skydivers do it everyday for the fun. I know, I have over 1700 jumps.

I asked our son if he was ever nervous jumping from a C-130, he said no. He was only nervous landing in a commercial airliner without his chute.

If we ignore all the negative things about Cruise and just look at the specific stunt then one has to be somewhat impressed. I don't know about any of you but I have never jumped out of an airplane and at my age probably never will (although I did have a near-miss on my first and last time soloing a cessna)

What is a 'near miss'? Does that mean a collision? A miss is a miss. Don't know of any near collisions. Wink!
