    A win for the Conservatives

The Canadian province of Ontario held a general election yesterday. The center-Left Liberal Party has been in power for about 14 years and have so mismanaged our economy that we now have more debt than California which has three times the population.

In addition to the Conservatives, we also have a party called the New Democratic Party (NDP) that is socialist.

Up until yesterday nobody was sure just who would win and a lot of people were predicting a minority in which the Socialist NDP would form a coalition with the Liberals and wreck even more havoc with our economy.

One major issue is that the Conservatives lost their leader a few months ago when he was accused of sexual impropriety with a high school girl. (He immediately resigned but a couple of weeks later she admitted that she had lied). A new leader was quickly elected but carries a lot of baggage with him. He is the brother of the former mayor of Toronto who became (in)famous for admitting that he used drugs and once said that he couldn't really remember what he had done "because he was in a drunken stupor". Even worse, from a political point of view is that the main stream media and a lot of critics branded him as a Canadian version of Donald Trump.

Bottom line is that the Conservatives won a solid majority in the Provincial Parliament and the Liberals dropped from a majority government to only 7 seats. The cut-off for being recognized as a party and getting extra research resources is 8 seats so they are SOL. The negative is that the socialist NDP is now the "Official Opposition" for the first time in their history.

It should be an interesting four years because the Conservatives are going to go into cut mode and everybody is going to be unhappy, even though it is absolutely necessary.

As a bit of humor I just looked up the official list of parties who participated in the election. The list includes: the Communist Party; the Go Vegan Party; The Party of Objective Truth / the POT Party; the Stop Climate Change Party; the Stop the new Sex-Ed Party and the Pauper Party of Ontario. Gotta love Democracy.

I wonder if they'll try to make decent health care in Ontario a bit harder to get like Republicans do in the US. I think Canadian Conservatives have more sense then the reactionary rabble that currently are in vogue in the USA.

Congratulations Mark. Looks like a bright future for Canada. Perhaps the voters saw what happened to the U.S. because of the liberals and want to keep it out of the sewer.

"A Canadian version of Trump" huh? Looks like that was a good endorsement for him.

Let us hope the country and my province follows suit.

        Congrats Mark.

Togor, you COULD move if you don't like what is going on in the U.S. Perhaps England/Germany would be more to your liking. The U.S. is turning to the right and more conservative. The Republic is back and hopefully democracy will be finally dead and buried.

The Michael Moore "documentary" Sicko extolled the virtues of the "free" health care system in Canada. Then the story came out of the Canadian boy whose operation was approved-two weeks AFTER he died.

Here's a hint for your Conservatives: Before you cut ANYTHING else, cut your own salaries. Once you do that, you have an answer to every complaint, "I know how you feel -- I cut my own pay."

Would it be painful? Yes, but how can a person presume to LEAD if he will not make the same sacrifices everyone else must make?

It's going to be working people in the red states who get squeezed by a lack of affordable health care, with exclusions for pre-existing conditions coming back thanks to the GOP. Basic health care is now so wicked expensive that it's priced beyond the reach of the working poor. Without the Federal government giving a crap it will fall to the states and counties. Blue states will take care of their own while working people in red states cheer, I guess. And the smart ones move. Meanwhile in Canada, working people wonder what the heck our problem is figuring out health care. Of course to the septuagenarian or octogenarian on this on forum on Medicare, none of this is a problem because that liberal Democratic social program has your back. So we shovel money at seniors and leave our kids to chance. The Dutch look at us doing this and also wonder WTF our problem is.

And Boggs wants to bury democratic participation in government through elections, only to replace it with what other process for selecting leaders? Fox News audition tapes? Trump Inc. performance reviews? Sam I'd call that night school to see if you can get your tuition back.

And Boggs so much for your recent pretty words about the nation sticking together. You cheer as loud as anyone while stuff unravels.

I'm also proud to be a black crow here at times because if I'm on the opposite side of an issue compared to say Allen, who for example openly dreams of the chance to shoot unarmed people at the border who are no threat to him, then I'm where I'm supposed to be.

"Reactionary rabble that currently are in vogue in the USA". Togor why do you insult people. I've never insulted you yet you consistently insult people including me.. As too my health care costs going up. Yes they are and it seems they started when Obama and his party passed the Affordable Health Care Act. This act also was the reason my company had to convert some job positions to part time. Who did that help?

When I retired 6 years ago my ins was to be $700 a month. It started going up as soon as I retired and I never paid $700--it is now $1400 a month and this is GROUP health insurance from a major corporation of which they claim to be paying most of it. All thanks to obama and his welfare insurance. On top of this the ins is crappy. Not only did the rates double, the coverage reduced. This is BC/BS ins and they tried to dodge paying an ambulance bill even.
