    Conspicuous consumption ...

I find it hard to figure why someone would pay $540,000
for a watch. Of course I don't have the multi millions that
he has, but even if I did, I don't think I'd waste that much
money on a watch that can't do more than keep perfect time.
My $10 watch keeps perfect time.
There, I just saved myself an imaginary $539, 990

There I agree with you. A lot of products like this -- fancy cars, watches and so on are advertised as giving "prestige." How much prestige is there in going around with something on your wrist that says, "I'm a sucker?"

A wrist watch worn in a tennis match that is worth the life's income of "many many" people attempting to enter the United States in the hope of just paying rent .....

.... and we find "them" to be offensive

At least he is doing something to earn what he spends and not coming here expecting me to give up what I work for to give to someone that is not supposed to be here in the first place. Illegal in my world still means criminal.

Talk about bad habits. Why can't any subject come up on this board without someone steering it towards a worn out political issue?

Why wear ANY watch while playing tennis? Only 50 were made because it's easier to find 50 suckers than millions at any given time. Fast bucks. Mind you it's not the first "limited edition" watch they made nor was it the first one he bought.

My question is if a watch is worth that much, how many security people are employed to guard the watch?

It is called advertising. The same reason other athletes wear Nike, Adidas and/or Under Armour.

Kinda like spending a few million on a painting that only a few will ever see.

Must disagree with you, Red. This isn't about mass production and global marketing. It's about catering to a few dozen shallow vanities. (Bully for them if they can do it) The only advertising the maker received came at no expense from a tennis player flaunting his new overpriced novelty in an inappropriate venue.
Again, who in their right mind would wear a wristwatch for something like that? He doesn't need a watch to compete. If time is important there are clocks and officials who's job it is to do that.

And the company made fifty of them. I hope there's fifty people on the planet that silly. If there are then maybe Bernie Sanders is right.

Can't, you and your "fiends" bought up the available supply. By the way how much ICE do you order with your drinks? When I drank [having curried cancer of the liver can't anymore] it was Napoleon Brandy or Makers Mark. I have a hard time in the spring with the cut in half whiskey barrels, the pure aroma of vanilla with charred oak. Thanks for the memories my friend, at least I can still enjoy it. Now it is cupcakes with Chocolate Malted Ovaltine...Oh well!
