This is obviously very sad for all concerned, but it
was totally preventable. Two deputies are transporting
a convicted murderer across the street and they manage
to get themselves shot ? What the Hell ? I read earlier
that it was the female officer who was overpowered,and
her firearm taken. How come the burly looking male
deputy wasn't close to the perp ? Why the Hell weren't
they paying attention and why was the murderer not in
handcuffs ?
What a waste of lives.

Either protocol wasn't followed or something very sneaky happened. Can't say because of lack of details for now. But you're right, it should not have happened. You can bet there will be a lot of complaining about the cuffs being too tight from now on.

Q: Were these 'deputies' LEO's or glorified court clerks?

How does perp get in just the right position to overcome a level 3 retention? And how could partner be so slow as to allow it?
