You can probably add the Czech Republic to the list. We were there a few years ago when the great African and Middle East migration to Europe was really just getting going. The Czech Republic essentially sealed its borders and would not let any of them in and did not seem to want to even let them pass through. We discussed this with our very pleasant and highly educated guide in Prague. She pointed out simply that theirs was a very small country and could not absorb an influx of people who could not and would not cease to be an alien element and that they had no intention of risking the destruction of their culture. I felt that both she and her government had a very realistic view of the future.

I assume that you are referring to the tens of thousands of Haitians who are entering Canada through non-official border crossings from New York State.

As I understand it, had these people tried to enter through a legal crossing point, they would have simply been rejected and not allowed into Canada. When people enter at some other location, they are arrested. Our Prime Minister seems determined to be the "nicest" leader in the world and accordingly, the people who are arrested are being processed and released pending a refugee hearing at some future date. For reasons that I have never understood, people awaiting a refugee hearing are able to receive welfare and in some cases have been bused to the welfare office in Montreal. (The Haitians speak a form of French and all want to move to Montreal). Given the number of people who are coming in, the refugee review process which is normally pretty slow is now overwhelmed and since the government requires that each individual receive a hearing, rather than making a "class" decision, the wait could be years. In the meantime the Quebec government has to pay the welfare since that is a provincial rather than a federal responsibility.

I have always been concerned when the first thing that a prospective immigrant does, is break the law and try to circumvent the process that is supposed to be followed. In my view, none of these people are bona fide refugees since to start with, they are already in a safe place (the USA). Secondly, they are not refugees in the sense of people fleeing political repression. They are economic migrants and they are and are going to continue to be a burden on our social systems.

I may be a bit hard nosed and unsympathetic but I feel that they should all be held in detention until their hearing and should not be given refugee status in any case.

Going on about 50 m. from my location--and thank God they're going & not coming! (Although a flood of Puerto Ricans is making up for the "loss.") They have the support of an army of bleeding-heart supporters who conduct them to the border, & over the winter were providing them with winter clothing among other things. These do-gooders aren't the usual sort--they're hard-core Trump-haters, who regard helping illegals as a way of striking back at the chief object of their hatred; same thing going on of course at southern border.
