Buying American, Canadian, Mexican, etc

Was looking at many of the items that I own and where did they come from. My computer is China, my clothes are various foreign, my boots Texas, my truck Dearborn, my rifle Alabama, my PDW West Germany, my semi-rifle Conn. If I buy only American, can America supply what I need? Many of our industries we no longer have, such as in electronics or some minerals. Trade is important but at what price?

Largest US nail manufacturer had to raise prices because of a 20% bump in the cost of Mexican steel. They could buy US steel, but they'll have to raise prices that way too. Right now foreign nails are cheaper, because the tariffs don't cover them. Sales are down.

Why should I believe that Trump and his small band of geriatric trade crackpots have the chops to pick winners and losers in the US economy? These kinds of problems were forseeable and indeed foreseen. Trump's 1950s trade nostalgia does more harm than good. And he's so easily bought off (see ZTE).

Be nice! The point I was making is that many products that I use can again be made here. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean that it is good. People want high wages and cheap cost, I don't see how that can happen. I have been reading up on "steel" and some steel is inferior to American produced due to manufacturing process. My choice on a gun safe was down to Cannon and Liberty for purchase. Cannon is made in Mexico using Mexican steel with Mexican labor...giving a non-American employment. The Liberty is made in American with American steel using American labor...giving a fellow American a job. Price is similar, guarantee is similar so I went American. I am willing to pay a little more for an American made product if the money will stay here in my country to help my country, why not?

I was making a general point, Sam. By all means, buy the safe you want. FWIW I have only GM and Chrsyler in my driveway (sorry Ford). No Japs, Koreans or Krauts. My commercial ammo is made here. No Serbian, Turk, Israeli, Czech, or cheap Russian stuff for me. So I get "buy American", I live it. But the economy is global, and if Trump unplugs from that then a lot of people are going to be out of jobs. With any luck that will include politicians who let it happen.

Togor with your constant comments on the President you have become a leftist model of that which you disdain on this board? You give the President more credit then he deserves, is this necessary? Also, a tariff will bring much needed income into our treasury as more money is needed for "social programs" as well. With that being said, who can be against tariffs if some of the funding goes to the "needy" of where you live.

Although I do not know if it is true, but it would appear that the trade in steel between our 2 countries is about equal. If this is true and I have no reason to suspect that it isn't, tariffs applied to the trade in steel between our 2 countries will only end up costing the common folks more money out of their pockets.
