The Germans, more, probably, than any country in Europe, are shirking on defense. The excuse in the beginning was restrictions placed on their military after WWII but that hasn't flown in a long time. In Iraq and Afghanistan their rules of engagement almost guaranteed they'd do little if any actual fighting. At one time they were not allowed to engage in night operations! Frankly, the French have contributed a lot more in actual in blood and treasure during the war on terror than the Germans, but so have the Danes and the Poles. Of the bigger European economies only the Brits truly pull their weight.

Also the Norwegians. Taught some bad boys a lesson one day in one of those bits used to be Yugoslavia. And don't forget the love and affection the Finns and Baltics have for their neighbors. All are shaming the Ubermensch.

Red you're echoing Trump's bean counter argument about foreign deployments. That argument overlooks a lot. No one is saying that the relationship is perfect, but heck yeah, better the krauts as friends instead of enemies. The argument that we should retreat from the world, friendless, crouching behind newly erected walls at our borders (why stop at the south) suits Trump's pathology and some others here, but is no formula for winning the future.

Germany also gets almost all of their gas from Russia in a dedicated pipeline. Trump asked the German ChieF of Staff about this. Why were they allowing themselves to become energy dependent on a country which is a major military threat to them? The German gave some stupid answer which is not even worth repeating. I believe we should pull out of NATO because it is now a joke. It would save us an enormous amount of money and the troops could be used here at home for a variety of things.

A better reason: Nato's penchant for making unprovoked war for the purpose of enforcing radical left-wing values on small countries that can't fight back, such as Serbia & Libya. If the logistics of doing the same to Burma (because that small country has no use for it's Muslim invaders) were not so difficult, Nato warplanes would be bombing the hell out of them too.

I don't know that the Wehrmacht was ever really great. They showed their weakness when they came up against the Russians. They were good against third rate armies, but just like the Japs, got their asses kicked in the end.

Like all those Brits at Dunkerque & North Africa? No country the size of Germany can take on the whole world, or most of it, & prevail. The Wehrmacht ran out of steam because they, unlike the Russians, ran out of supplies, including men.
