Yes, the Bolsheviks killed four teenage girls and their 13 year old brother. Really proud of themselves.

Those girls died a very painful death too. They had previously sewn the family's gem stones in their undergarments for safe keeping due to the uprising. When shot the bullets would hit the gem stones and deflect. The report was that they were shot several times each in order to kill.

Several years ago there was a Nicholas and Alexandra exhibit here in Mobile, AL. The exhibit consisted of uniforms, numerous pictures and artifacts, his throne, carriage, Faberge eggs, and even a piece of the blood soaked wallpaper from the shooting. The narrator went to great detail of the murder incident.

The throne and carriage were used by previous czars as well such as Catherine the Great and so on. Some exhibits were behind glass, some roped off and most all were protected with alarms. While the display was in town a school group went. One of the teachers somehow thought she was above everyone else and passed through the barricade to sit in the famous throne. Within seconds she was grabbed by security and thrown out on her butt. A fine example for the students.

Yes, I had forgotten about that. The narrator said the girls were jumping all over the place while being shot. The shooters couldn't understand what was going on so they were then stabbed and finished off with a shot to the head.

"The executioners drew handguns and the shooting began. Nicholas was the first to die; Yurovsky shot him several times in the chest (sometimes incorrectly said to have been in his head, but his skull bore no bullet wounds when it was discovered in 1991). Anastasia, Tatiana, Olga, and Maria survived the first hail of bullets; the sisters were wearing over 1.3 kilograms of diamonds and precious gems sewn into their clothing, which provided some initial protection from the bullets and bayonets.[110] They were stabbed with bayonets and then shot at close range in their heads".

After seeing the exhibit I had some short term interest in Imperial Russia so I bought a model 91 Nagant with the Imperial double headed eagle stamped on the receiver and barrel. It is dated 1917 and was made in America for Russia by Remington Armory. I think a lot of these Remington's and Westinghouse Nagant's never made it to Russia though because they wouldn't pay for them and ended up in Finland.

This exhibit was about 15-20 years ago. While the artifacts were here the U.S. claimed that since Russia owed America for some old debts that the U.S. would seize the items. After quite a fuss it was deemed that due to the historical significance all the items would be returned to Russia. Because of this I don't think the items ever returned for more exhibits. It is now done on line.

Thousands of others were bought by the US gov't & later sold through DCM to NRA members for give-away prices. For many yrs afterwards, sporting mags regularly featured articles on "sporterizing" these guns--which is why these US-made '91s in original condition are no longer common.

Russia has a sad history. Unfortunately the Russian people with the "Revolution" simply exchanged the hereditary royal family for the political royalty of the Communist party. For the average Russian they saw little real change after the "revolution". In many ways they went from the frying pan to the fire.

Some interesting history on the Remington and Westinghouse rifle contracts with the Russian government.

The main change due to the Communist take-over was that millions and millions of people died. It has been estimated that if Stalin had not killed so many innocent people, the population of Russia would be double what it is today.

Alexander Beloborodov (1891-1938) was the Chairman of the Ural Soviet who signed the orders for the Romanovs murder. He was eliminated in Stalin's purges, Robert Conquest relates the story of him being dragged down a corridor in the Lubyanka shouting :
"I am Beloborodov ! Pass word to the central Committee that I am being tortured!"
