    Making America Great Again ....

We were getting nervous as my upcoming surgery was imminent and finding an employee to take my spot for a few months was proving to be …. difficult .

However, just in the nick of time we found Walt.

Walt showed up for the job interview wearing his “Make America Great Again” hat.

The hat didn’t get him hired….. what got him hired was that he had arms and legs…spoke English. And he layed claim to handyman skills and expressed willingness to work the cleaning side of the business .

However ...typical of all my American hires … Walt couldn’t start Wednesday .....but Thursday was OK .

On Friday he informed us he needed the following week off as a sister in law was coming down from up North .... obviously not something that would come up in a job interview .

The next week his first try out on the handyman side of the business was a two and a half hour paint touch up . After an hour and a half he needed to go home…… and as far as finishing the next day…..

” Well .... I’d like to, but the wife and I have someone coming to the house to clip the dogs toe nails .”

Clip the effen dogs toe nails ? …looked me right in the eye…and that’s what he said.

Next Tuesday evening Walt phoned at 7:15 to say he was sorry but he can’t make it in to work …

“Gotta take the wife in to a Doctor as she’s really ill…. heat stroke.”

Turns out that after a few Brandy and Sevens he took a nap , woke up at 7 p.m. and thought it was Wednsday morning . After I explained the time frame he said he’d be able to make it at the usual time…

” Glad the Missus is feeling better Walt ” I said

Week three and the Monday morning start came with a call from Walt …

” Sorry, can’t make it… gotta rush to the hospital ”

Tuesday was the explantion that another day off was necessary as the trip to the hospital yesterday brought the prognosis of …. hemmorhoids .

So… here we are… helping make America great again …one effen hemmorhoid at a time

I'd cut him loose. Politics has nothing to do with it.

Yes, the hat is just eyewash. And it sound like he doesn't need-or want-the job that badly. Probably pressured by the unemployment office, or he or his wife is trying to maintain a "disability" certfication.

Are all the people in your neighborhood idiots?
I was going to ask if you lived in a ghetto, but I cut it.
That would be insulting. Actually, I am leaning towards a fake post.
So, what exactly do you do? It sure as heck isn't some kind of rocket science.
        A paper route?

Do I live in a Ghetto .... a fair question Dryheat ... for a start where we live is predominantly white anglo and my hiring problems aren't just localised to my neighborhood . I suffer the same probs our own President does in trying to staff Mar a Lago . 140 job openings and he only landed one American hire .

Building repair maintenece / common area cleaning of condo's and office space .. quite correct, not rocket science . A few years ago our problem was we couldn't provide a full time job. Now my applicants are retired and don't want to work Mondays or Wednesdays etc....or they are young and don't want to do anything but play on a phone .

And the multitudes....multitudes of applicants from a seemingly normal suburban town that can't pass a background check just boggles my mind

Oh...and Walt... he came down from Wisconsin last year...I'm {was} his fifth employer in that time.

You are looking micro, look at macro sociology. What you are seeing is American Culture that is inbred starting with Johnson's Great Society. It will not help to "import" people from other cultures as in a coupe of generations these "import" children will be infected with the same sociologically affliction of "entitled" government assistance. Any politician of either party that tries to reduce/break these entitlements will be voted out of office and the idea will die. One segment of political society needs these people to be in power, both sides bow down to the negative reality. Many business are turning to mechanization such as the fast food industry. Our local McDonalds is remodeling and installing kiosks for ordering, in addition to the phone inquiring. "Time saving" is in reality labor savings, the first step in needing less to do the same and therefore cheaper. Restaurants can afford to pay $15.00 an hour if only a 10th of the labor force is needed. Our daughter started as a cashier at Wal-Mart 4 years ago along with 9 other people, she is the only one left. Wal-Mart and many other's are now turning to self checkout to reduce the absent labor. Samantha, my daughter, was promoted and is now in charge of 4 self checkout register's. Wal-Mart cut the labor need and cost by a factor of 3 here and people no longer complain of not having a cashier! Many labor using industries are going to machines to pick/harvest the fruit whenever possible. Any industry that needs human labor on a large scale is going to have a hard time and will need to change. With the "legalization" of cannabis who will be able to pass a drug test? The old social norms are going bye-bye and with-it society and societal needs. I suspect in 20 years background checks will be can you start tomorrow and no I don't care if you steal or shoot up on the job...just show up to give an appearance of "doing something" and society will reflect it! Look at Chicago's violence and the policy of blaming an object instead of the actor. Chicago now is beginning to understand the idea of locking up the actor, although other politicians hang onto the outmoded idea of throwing money at the problem and everything will be OK.

Interesting comments set by one benefiting from Great Society and New Deal Deal (Social Security and Medicare). We (society and health care systems) don't have any problems paying for complications of smoking, alcohol use and obesity. What is particularly onerous is the Surgeon's Report of 1963 telling of the dangers of smoking and the more recent reports by the CDC of several cancers directly relating to alcohol use.

And as for obesity, I look to see a Regressive judge to rule any day now that the Military height-weight standards are "discriminatory."

Sandpebble, I have seen the same when it comes to apathetic employees. Just prior to retiring I saw the most recent batch of apprentices had more than their fair share of azzhats who weren't going to make the grade. No-shows and late-shows on projects. Had one who showed up at 8:45 (7am start) smiling and said he was ready to take the coffee order. Late, then run out on an errand before opening his toolbox? I sent him home instead...with a smile of course. Two can play that child's game.

Since retiring I have focused my interest in charity work for less fortunate kids and seniors. Good kids and people who need a break. Nobody ever looks that direction.
Many younger volunteers who we'd be better off without. Always jumping in and offering their time and never coming through on their promises. Makes us old guys run around in desperation at the last minute picking up the slack. We've decided they can work the events if they show up, but the planning is better left to those we KNOW we can trust and don't simply disappear once they realize they've "screwed the pooch". Youngsters on the phone all the time but can't make a call to say they've hit a snag a month ahead of the deadline. There are a lot of "Walts" out there.

You have a business. You need to screen a lot better. Your Walt has an obvious problem you cannot fix.

Uh,huh. I kind of get it now. After retirement I played around for three yrs. I did stuff, but I am actually kind of lazy and without a frame work I can waste a lot of time. Finally, I decided to go back to work. There was an opening near where I live for custodian. I worked with two women who had been there for decades. I loved that job. When the senior lady retired we went through a whole bunch of temps. Eye opening. Everyone is on the phone. Some had mental issues, we actually called security a time or two. They finally put on a young woman. She is on the phone 80% of the evening. She will be late at least once a week(she learned that she needs to call ahead). She runs through her routine in three hrs. and then plays on the phone for the rest of the evening. Does everything get done? No. Does her area look good? No. Once in a while the other old lady has to round her up and prod her into doing a little concentrated work. She's a sweetheart and we all like her but work ethic? On the flipside, when I left they put on another woman who works her tail off. So there are workers and slackers, but I will agree, more and more people are being born that have no idea what work is all about. It was instilled in me as a kid, do 110%. When you think you're done, look around, there is always a little something else that needs looking after. When I left that job my boss told me, I'm going to miss you. I'm proud of that.
If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.

Well now for the point of the original post ...

                      Not a Trump bash ... but this whole thing of Make America Great Again ..... that's up to us... especially those who were led to believe that America wasn't great { I never lost my belief in that fact }

Mr. trump can loudly proclaim his intention of bringing manufacturing back and provide us all with great paying jobs... and we all sing Rah Rah Rah ... at least those that don't need a job anyway.

But the real facts of life boys and girls ... is that even with their tax reduction..... corporations are never going to set up shop where they know they can't get labor .

Simple fact of business..... never set up your business where you can't employ people ... or where customers have no place to park .... simple.

Keep America Great ... that's what should be on our hats... and we don't need anyone to fool us into believing he is going to do that for us
