    West Virginia Justices impeached.

    This is an interesting development -- perhaps all judges will take warning,

    The state of West Virginia just impeached all four state Supreme Court Justices.

      I've seen it done both ways -- you really don't get better judges either way. Now term limits would work -- remember the Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice who sneered, "I don't care! I'm appointed for life!" And making it easier to fire them would also help. The great flaw in the American system is that we don't have true accountability.

              The problem with electing judges is its impossible to find information on them. I actually always vote not to retain unless I am familiar with them. If they are terrible enough people in the know will also vote that way. It has been rare a local judge is voted out. The one time I can remember was a Judge thats problems made it to the paper.

                  In New Jersey judges are nominated by the Governor, if confirmed by the State Senate serve for 7 years, if reconfirmed can serve until they are 70. 30 years ago Governor Kean refused to re-nominate a judge he said was too lenient on criminals. Otherwise we have an Imperial Judiciary. Always whining that they are underpaid.
                  In 1981 one of the state top lawyers told me:
                  "The people who want to become judges are people who couldn't earn a living as lawyers."
