I am told by my European friends that vaccinations are less popular there. Just not as rooted in the culture. Flu shots? Bah. Seems short sighted to me. I do seem to have natural immunity to Trump, though. I wouldn't buy so much as a pack of shoelaces from that guy. And not because of any specific policy. Just because I know he'd be trying to cheat me. And when I'd call him on it he'd say "if you're not willing to cheat then you're not trying to win".

The article is about a very real problem and one of the reasons they, like us are seeing an increase in diseases is the influx of people from other countries. In Houston we are seeing diseases that we haven't seen in decades and they are coming from the invaders over our southern borders.

The problem with having a discussion about diseases moving north over the border is that politics limit which vectors you can talk about. A bit like Soviet science where only certain points of view were politically possible. So we can talk about human vectors, as in diseased hordes flooding the border. That's OK. But we can't talk about diseases extending their range due to changes in the climate that increase the range of insect or other environmental vectors. That's a no-no. But the thing is, nature doesn't care about politics, and if one can't bring themselves to take a scientifically complete assessment of the situation due to politics, then there really isn't much to talk about. It will be what it will be.

But the earlier segue to Trump was not completely off-point. Politics, which Trump dominates, says that some of these ancillary effects of climate change, such as tropical diseases moving north, cannot be adequately discussed, because Trump has taken the political position that climate change is not happening, or alternately that to the extent that it is, we are to do nothing about it, either by way of short-term accommodation, or long-term mitigation. Meanwhile over in Scotland, at a certain golf estate by the sea....

In Houston which is a sanctuary city we have a rise of TB. Looking at the TB cases in Texas the greatest population percents are among Hispanics and in the counties that are sanctuary cites. I won't try to tell you not to be bothered by the sanctuary city thing, but consider this brief tale. My daughter is currently a resident at a hospital in a red state, far from any border. A child was brought to that hospital from overseas for treatment by a humanitarian organization. Not to live here, but to be treated. As it turns out, the person boarded the plane with undiagnosed TB. So now they have to work back through the passenger registries and do notifications. Whatever does or doesn't happen with immigration reform, we're still going to have busy international terminals. Most but not all of the people in those terminals will be Americans. Some of the people, including Americans, will be traveling to/from places with diseases we'd prefer not to have here--India for example. Very few of the people in that terminal will be coming here disease-ridden with the hopes of gaining asylum in a sanctuary city.
