The raising and lowering of the Flag for a Congressman?

My understanding is that, according to national policy, upon the death of a Congressman or Senator, the flag on the capital is supposed to be lowered for 24 hrs after which it is again raised up. If this is true, why all the criticism about Trump following that requirement. Why was McCain not just a congressman but declared a national hero and if so, how is one determined, to be a national hero? Just wondering, Ray

It is what it is. The policy as cited is not law but merely a stated policy. It can be followed or ignored. Over the many years of our nations existence it has been followed and it has been ignored.

As a young boy I can remember President John Kennedy being applauded by just about anyone and everyone for being a war hero and senator and president. That was the result of a broad majority of people speaking their own minds. That is now the case with McCain. He was broadly popular with the voters of Arizona who he represented for many many years as senator. He was well regarded by members on both sides of the aisle of the Senate as well as the House of Representatives.

McCain and Trump had personal issues due to neither one being capable of getting along with the other given that neither one seemed capable of listening, etc., to the other. This is likely reflected in the small minded response the White House has given to his death, etc. The same is true of the published statement of McCain regarding his view of the nation, service, faith, etc. Sincerely. bruce.

Trump did the minimum required. Speaks volumes.

Look at who is attending his funeral/disposal. Look at who was denied attendance.

Everything you hear is from the news media. To them he is a great hero to oppose Trump on every single issue no matter what it was.

The democrats all hail him as their hero, a leader for their cause on the opposing party though in 2008 they could not say enough bad about him while bringing up his service record.

The North Vietnamese no doubt see him as the greatest thing since Jane Fonda. How many of their soldier's could have singlehandedly taken out nearly 300 U.S sailors, destroyed numerous aircraft and damaged a U.S. carrier?

If you've noticed Lindsey Graham has toned down his opposition since it was discovered a year ago that McCain had the tumor. Lindsey has lost his mentor.

People have been court marshalled, fined, jailed and executed for far less than what McCain has done.

For those who say he should be honored for serving in the military it has been brought up before and pretty much confirmed that he enlisted to boost his career, not to serve. Considering the lives and damage he was responsible for you would have to ask: "whose side was he on"? "What country did he serve"?

Exactly--that & ONLY that made him a hero to the left-wing media; if he'd been a draft-resistor who somehow got elected Senator (quite possible in CA!), the media would be glorifying him even more!

He is going to be buried at the cemetery at Annapolis. I also read on Fox News that Trump will award him the Medal of Honor. Why? What the hell did he ever do to deserve this?

The man was a veteran and pilot who got shot down doing his job. There is no doubt that he survived torture and horrendous abuse but in my opinion he is not a hero. Audi Murphy was a hero.
