Then let's just get rid of it. Go from July 3 to July 5, just like there's no 13th floor in hotels ?

Frederick Douglas must have had a little white in him.

Oh, big surprise. I just looked it up.

      - He did know that his father was white, and he believed he was his master, Aaron Anthony.-

Reminds me of that Kaperdink goofball. Just enough white to get smart. I could list a bunch.
      Like Queana(sp) Very Smart Cherokee(who wasn't a smart ass).

Where do these white people get off acting sooo superior?

If we could do that we could just illuminate presidents that were nothing more than bad memories. We could go from 43 to 45 or even better yet go from 40 to 45.

Douglass, who was known in the 1850s to give some fiery speeches about slavery, later became a friend of President Abraham Lincoln.

That a black former slave should see hypocrisy in whites celebrating their July 4th freedoms while many blacks remain in bondage shouldn't surprise anyone. That an activist 150 years later says the message remains completely true today is a little over the top, but no moreso than some of the things that get said by the opposite political faction. To my view there are many similarities between the 1850s and today.

That's exactly the impression I got. A century and a half out of context. The words meant something and they were powerful words of truth way back when Douglass wrote them. To quote him while applying it to their latter day crusade (whatever it is on any given day) is moronic. Too bad todays undereducated fools toe the line to that rhetoric. Perspective-wise. Not to dismiss wise words from a wise man of the past.

Vicksburg surrendered to Grant on July 4, 1863, they didn't celebrate July 4 again until 1945.
              Frederick Douglass quotes ?
"Let a black man get upon his person the brass letters US, let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder and bullets in his pocket, and there is no power on the earth or under the earth which can deny that he has earned the right of citizenship in the United States."

For example, the blacks are still held in slavery by the Democrats, while the Republicans fight to free them.

I wonder if it will come to another actual war?

                Very insightful, togor.

The Democrats are once again the party of States Rights.

Do you have any extra to lend, I could use some for mine. With all the money I have spent I need to see the winning lottery numbers!
